For two millennia, the figure of a man purported to have powers to heal and overcome death has been carved and painted throughout the American continents. Kokopelli, as this person is sometimes known, plays a flute and carries a large bag over his shoulder as he travels from culture to culture. Teaching the art of healing, crop cultivation, and belief in Quetzalcoatl, the benevolent and holy god who is to return one day to his people on this earth.

White Thunder, an adventurous young Apache boy on the verge of seeking his warrior hood, has heard much about Kokopelli from his grandfather, a great teacher in the village. With time for little more than playing with his friends, White Thunder never suspected that his eventual encounter with the legendary and wise Kokopelli would lead him on the adventure of his life. Treason from the most unlikely of comrades, high-stakes pursuit of the beautiful Towhee, slavery in the Spanish gold mines, a search for a rare and spotted buffalo, and the renewed friendship of a once bitter hatred are among many paths White Thunder will travel in his search to become a warrior among his people and to finally understand the teachings of the mysterious Kokopelli.
