When young Greg Cima moves our to the Southwest with his mother, he expects a smooth transition and a good start to a new life. His reception, however, is far from what he had hoped. Since Greg's father is an inmate in a nearby penitentiary, the town looks down on Greg, and assumes that, "like father like son," he will be a delinquent. Greg hopes that his football talent will allow him to gain acceptance, but when the town's discrimination keeps him off the field, all seems lost.

In his darkest hour, Greg is visited by a mysterious Native American spirit who seems to have all the answers. And tries to help Greg live free enough to run like the wind.
